Subject: Christmas Revised - Does anyone remember?

I'm having a discussion about Maharaji with a premie friend of mine and it appears that our combined recollections are not in synch in regards to the issue of whether or not ashram premies or pre-ashram premies were told that they could not go home to their families on Christmas because Maharaji was now our family.  This was in the early 70's.

Here's what my friend says:

Re the early days, and M telling ashram residents 'they couldn't go home for Xmas': there were 1 or 2 overzealous people running ashrams at the time, but I don't remember M ever saying that. Depending on circumstances, lot of people went home to see their families, or at least called them.

Granted Maharaji himself did not do the call-down to each ashram and some honchos made the calls.  But, I recall the evening at the ashram when we were told that the agya came from Maharaji.  I also recall that the General Secretary verified the instructions with HQ because a lot of premies were begging for a clearer ruling.  And it took a few days to come down, but the final ruling was said to have come directly from Maharaji.

Ashram members were told that they must relate to the directions from the coordinators as if they were from himself. So it really doesnt make any difference 'who said it'. Maharaji being the leader is vicareously responsible.

Members of the ashram lived under the rules created by Guru Mahaharj Ji. Here is an exerpt fromt he rule book written by M.

A. Personal Conduct

1. Members must be willing to completely cooperate with the directives of the Ashram Supervisor. The Ashram policy is determined by Guru Maharaj Ji. The Ashram Supervisor is directly responsible to Guru Maharaj Ji for the maintenance of every aspect of ashram life. Members should, therefore, follow the instructions of the Ashram Supervisor and help life in the ashram to flow smoothly.

Subject: Yes, but my recollection was...
The General Secretary told everyone that Maharaji had given the directive that premies should not go home to their families.  It really did not, absolutely not, sound like a local decision.  Of course, the decision was relayed by Denver HQ, but, again, it appeared that there was a fair of amount of "clarification" until Maharaji made the decision.  That's my perspective.

Subject: OF COURSE that was the directive

We were in a war against darkness back then.  Every breath, every second, every dime, every possible resource within reach had but one righteous use, namely to be committed in unquestioning, loving service to the Lord of Light.  Christmas is a "time-out" for society but to Rawat and his followers back then there were no time-outs in the fight to spread Knowledge and enable Him to save the world.  Premies only had one use for Christmas, or any holiday for that matter, and that was as a propagation tool, a conversation piece to broach the subject of the Lord Incarnate and tell an astonished public that He was here again.  Rawat made that abundantly clear many times over that the last thing he wanted was for us to use this holiday as an excuse to feed our ignorance-born, ego-based identities as our families were so wont to do.

For instance:

Christmas Satsang, December 25, 1979, as published in THE DIVINE TIMES, January/February, 1980.

'And there is only one path: to become a devotee, to completely dedicate, to completely be dedicated and to completely let go of this life...And the only reason for this existence is to be a devotee. And the only thing that ever happens is devotion. And this mind, body and soul are focused on one thing and that is devotion to Guru Maharaj Ji.'

'A devotee will follow their Guru Maharaj Ji wherever Guru Maharaj Ji goes and not be involved in anything else.'

Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace is that power that pulls you out....Guru Maharaj Ji's Grace is that power that saves a being. And only when we become a devotee, only then are we even capable of receiving that Grace.'

'And the ones who deserve it get it. When those devotees those beings who have recognized their Guru Maharaj Ji, those beings. And once I was just reading that statement of Kabirdas. And he says, 'PEOPLE WHO CONSIDER GURU MAHARAJ JI SOMETHING ELSE ARE DEFINITELY BOUND TO HELL.'' THERE'S NO IF'S, AND'S AND BUT'S ABOUT IT.'

'And what do you want for Christmas?...Nobody thinks about why Jesus came into this world. Nobody thinks of that: what's really true of Knowledge, why Jesus came as Guru Maharaj Ji for those devotees, revealed Knowledge to them, gave them that experience. Nobody remembers that. Because Christ came. His purpose, was for sat chit and anand. What he came in this world for, what he revealed in this world, was this Knowledge, that love, that devotion...For a devotee it's always Merry Christmas because there is never a time in this world when Guru Maharaj Ji isn't here.'

But I mean the devotee's prayer to Guru Maharaj Ji always is, 'Oh Guru Maharaj Ji, YOU ARE ALL-POWERFUL, you are all merciful. Save me. Give me that help that I need in my life.'

In the ashrams, we were certainly discouraged from relating to our families over Christmas.  And it all was because of satsangs like the above.  Anyone who says otherwise either wasn't there or, for whatever reason, won't or can't face the truth of the matter.

Subject: So, it was not the Indian Mahatmas who said this stuff, huh?

Maharaji himself said this, right?

And Maharaji said this in 1979?  Gosh, that would make Maharaji (born December 1957) over 22 years old.  Hardly, a 13 year boy Guru under the influence of his older brothers and mother and Indian Mahatmas.

How can Elan Vital claim that people other than Maharaji were responsible for the whole "Lord of the Universe" debacle?  Are they that dishonest?  Are they that deceptive?  Where is the "sat" or truth in satchitanand?  I guess you need to discard the truth when you are talking about making a living and attracting new cult members.  Holy freaking sheesh!

Hey, here's a classic Maharaji video (circa 1978).

Where did we ex-premies get all those ideas about Perfect Masters and Guru Maharaj Ji being the same (no, greater) than Christ?  Come on!  Raise your hands!  How many of you thought Rawat was referring to his father, Shri Hans, when he gave "satsang" like this?  And on Christmas??  Who thought about going home for Christmas when he's sitting in front you telling you he's like Christ?  No one that I knew.  This "satsang" was given a short time after the DECA move from the tiny Hialeah, Florida warehouse to the big complex.  That's where this "satsang" took place -- in the shiny new satsang room that was also used for the IDP (Initiator[Instructor] Development) programs in the coming year.

Rawat was 22 years old at the time.  I didn't notice anyone forcing him to say this stuff.  Not one Mahatma was playing his puppeteer.  Quite the contrary -- how the Indian Mahatmas behaved in Rawat's presence would be described as excessive devotional fawning!  As did we all -- fawn in excess, that is.

Not only were most of the workers at DECA ashram premies -- no one gave too much thought to going home for Christmas.  There was no way to do that (especially to ask to be flown home for the holidays--no way!! lol!).  To ask would have been blasphemy.
