 Response from The Vermont Historical Society

Last week Thorin posted a link to TPRF's "Honors" page. Included under the section "Letters of Thanks" (to Rawat) were The National Geographic Society, The Vermont Historical Society, among others, and because I live in Vermont, I wrote to the VHS asking what it was that Prem Rawat did or gave to VHS to receive a letter of appreciation and the following is the response I received today:

Ms. Cynthia,

I write in response to the e-mail you sent to Kevin Graffagnino, Director of the Vermont Historical Society, regarding the use of the Vermont Historical Society's name on the website of Prem Rawat of Malibu, California.

The Vermont Historical Society does not have any association with Prem Rawat, who says that he has a letter of appreciation from us. It is our practice to send thank you notes to individuals, organizations, or companies who give us items for our library collections. The act of saying "thank you" does not mean that we will necessarily keep the item in our library. I
suspect that Prem Rawat or one of his followers gave us one of his books (or similar item) and we acknowledged the gift. I vaguely remember something like this coming into the library many years ago. I have looked in our paper file of past gift acknowledgements and I don't see anything under "Prem," "Rawat," or "Maharaji." If he used a different name, or if one of his followers gave us the gift, I would not be able to find it.

I can assure you that we did not add Prem Rawat's book (or whatever it was) to our collection, since it has nothing to do with Vermont, which is our collecting focus. I am afraid that there is really nothing we can do about Prem Rawat listing us an organization that sent him a letter of appreciation.
