In 1985 I was visiting friends in Santa Monica and was in a restaruant when I saw this guy sitting at the next table all dressed in white and had a long beard.

I asked him what he was and he told that he lives in an ashram of Yogi Bhajan(whom I'd never heard of).

He invited me round to his place. He had own small house together with several other  devotees who had their own houses, all i n the same block.
I was quite impressed with their setup as compared to the several ashrams I lived in in England. They certainly had a better standard of living. They all worked.

They invited me to participate in a festival they were having. It was a Sikh festival where they read out loud their scripture(GGS) all the way through(Akhand Paath).

The reading was done in English as all there were Americans. I was invited to read for an hour, which I did.
I told them I was a premie of The Satguru who gave the Holy Name. All they said was "Well, remember it."

I took that as GMJ telling me not to forget to meditate.
I did not feel they were exclusivists( although I was  at the time).

Also while I was in Santa Monica, I met with several people who lived near pr in Malibu. They wanted to know all about their neighbour and his brother(RJ).

They had no idea he was a guru. They kept me up a whole night asking me questions about him.
In my premie mind, I believed this was the reason I was there.

When I came back to London, I met up with a premie who used to be an ashram  housefather. When I told him about my visit to SM and the conversations I had with pr's neighbours, he bollocked me for talking about pr in that situation. He said it was interferring with pr's private life.
I reminded him that pr said  that "In Guru Maharaj JI's world, there is no privacy".

End of titbit

it's interesting to look back at early moments that stand out.

I was 18 years old, not an adult in sight and yet when I was confronted with the idea I should move into the ashram I said no because I knew I couldn't keep a promise to get up early in the morning, I was a teenager I slept til 10.

That shows principles doesn't it.  So fast forward 25 years and I am being told to refer to the Lord of the Universe as the Guest Speaker and yes okay I was uncomfortable with it but oh well there are nutters out there and you have to protect his privacy.  Good grief.

I wish I'd heard that saying - in Guru Maharaj Ji's world there is no privacy - at the time.  That would be quite interesting how I managed to square that one away.
